What the Nagios ecosystem is

Nagios is not a single product. It is a set of self-hosted solutions for IT infrastructure monitoring, network traffic analysis and log management, spanning open-source and commercially licensed software. Each piece deploys standalone and exchanges data with the others through native integrations and REST APIs.

How monitored infrastructure enters the Nagios engines and comes back out as dashboards, reports, API access and notifications.

How the data moves

  1. Sources. Switches and routers, servers, virtual machines and cloud, applications, databases and logs: the infrastructure being watched.
  2. Collection. Each source reaches Nagios through a different channel — SNMP or NCPA/NRPE for checks, syslog and Windows Event Log for Log Server, NetFlow, sFlow, J-Flow or IPFIX for Network Analyzer.
  3. Output. Every engine exposes its own dashboards, reports, configuration and API. Nagios XI additionally triggers notifications when it detects a problem.

The components, one by one

Nagios XI + Core — the central engine

Runs the checks, evaluates thresholds in active and passive monitoring, and fires the alerts. Core is the open-source engine; XI adds the web interface, dashboards, guided configuration and the API on top of it.

Nagios Log Server

Centralizes syslog and Windows Event Logs from applications and databases for search, correlation and auditing. It is what turns "something went down last night" into an answer with a timestamp, a host and a cause.

Nagios Network Analyzer

Analyzes the traffic exported by switches and routers via NetFlow, sFlow, J-Flow and IPFIX. It gives the flow-level view that Nagios XI checks do not cover on their own: who is consuming the link, where to, and since when.

Nagios Fusion

Polls several Nagios XI instances and combines them into a single view. Useful once monitoring spans multiple sites, regions or business units with independent operations.

Plugins and Nagios Exchange

Standard plugins ship with XI and Core out of the box. Nagios Exchange is the community library: any additional check is downloaded and installed from there. If you already have your own check_ scripts, they carry over as they are — one of the strongest reasons to stay on Nagios.
